Five ways to prevent the risk of HIV/AIDS infection

परिचय

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is a sexually transmitted infection causing damage to your immune system. There is no cure for HIV/AIDS, but medications can slow the progression of the disease. Following are few tips to prevent getting infected with HIV.

  • Get tested and know your partner’s HIV status- Talk to your partner about HIV testing and get tested before you have sex.
  • Use condoms. HIV is spread through bodily fluids like blood, semen, and vaginal fluids. When used properly, condoms are an effective way to prevent HIV infection.
  • Ask your doctor about PrEP. PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a medication that people without HIV can take daily to prevent infection. When combined with other HIV prevention methods, such as regular testing and condom use, you’ll significantly reduce your risk of HIV infection.
  • Limit how many partners you have. Having fewer sexual partners reduces your risk of being exposed to the virus. Also, make sure your partners get tested regularly, too.
  • Avoid injecting drugs. Sex isn’t the only way HIV is transmitted. Intravenous drug use also puts you at risk, since HIV can be spread through blood. Avoid injecting drugs and never share needles.
