Diet tips to manage diabetes – Dr Vandana Verma

Diet and nutrition play a prominent role in managing diabetes. The food we consume is directly proportional to the impact it would have on our blood glucose levels.

In an exclusive chat, Dr. Vandana Verma, Founder, Physiotherapist and Nutritionist at Fitness4all gives us diet tips to manage diabetes.

• Snacks to avoid – biscuits and fried namkeen
• Fruits and vegetables – Eat all natural fruits and vegetable although some should be consumed in moderation such as pumpkin; beetroot; potatoes; bananas and mangoes.
• Dates/ Khajoor- High in antioxidants, fibre and minerals are also high in sugar so to be eaten in moderation. It is a better substitute for sugar for desserts.
• The thumb rule for consumption – Produce with Low glycemic index can be eaten in abundance, produce with High glycemic index in moderation. Please refer to our calorie counter section that highlights items that are low/high in glycemic count
• Sugar – Avoid all. Brown or White. Substitute with stevia or sugar free options.
• Beverages – Both Tea/Coffee without added sugar are OK; Avoid regular milk which contains lactose. Opt for skimmed; almond or lactose free milk depending on your blood glucose counts.
• Cottage cheese/ Paneer- made from skimmed milk at home; Avoid fried or bought.
• Grains – Semolina/ Suji should be avoided as it is a simple carb. Opt for grains with complex carbs such as Quinoa; Oats/ Daliya; Whole wheat; Ragi.
• ‘Gharelu nuskhe’/ home remedies – Tulsi (holy basil), Neem, Giloy and Fenugreek are all good for diabetes.
