How to Handle Our Emotions: Psychologist Aman Gouri

How to Handle Our Emotions, Psychologist Aman Gouri tell us ways of doing it. Every individual experiences emotional ups and downs at some point in life and so it is important to learn how to control and regulate our emotions.

Aman Gouri (Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Serenity Clinic and Arcadia Clinic) tells us how we must get rid of cultural and gender stereotypes when it comes to emotional responses. For example, when men cry, their sensitivity is viewed in a negative light. However, she explains that as human beings, we all undergo emotional strife and so, must learn how to handle it without any bias. Hence, it is okay for men to cry, as it is for women to cry.

She explains that handling or regulating emotions is a three-step process:-

  1. Identifying: It is important to first observe and analyse what we are feeling by being mindful and self-aware. If one constantly experiences negative emotions, it is important to first observe them before immediately reacting to them.
  2. Evaluating: The second step is to evaluate our negative emotions to see if we can overcome them. For example, if we are in a social setting and feel sad or angry, we must hold back and think of the best possible way to proceed. The possibilities might include extracting yourself from the situation, assertively expressing yourself, or trying to calm yourself by employing some breathing techniques.
  3. Modulating: Finally, by controlling the manner of expression, we can modulate and regulate our emotions. This allows us to be in control of our emotions and thereby makes us a better judge of our actions.

Mastering this three-step technique can help us express our emotions in a balanced manner.
