Tips for Good Mental Health in Women

Women have numerous responsibilities to take care of and the workload can become strenuous and impact their mental health. Here are some tips for good mental health in women.

Dr. Deepshikha Kavya (MBBS, DPM, Consultant Psychiatrist, Special Medical Officer, Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital, Bihar) states that Indian culture places a bucket-load of responsibilities on the woman of the house. She explains that in our culture the woman is blamed for the behaviour of her children, her husband, and her family and she is solely held responsible for the happiness of the household.

This mentality needs to change. Dr. Deepshikha believes that this change needs to be facilitated by the male counterparts. She explains how it is important for men to stand in support of women and shoulder some of their responsibilities.

To improve the mental health of women, Dr. Deepshikha recommends strengthening familial ties through communication. She states that women and their in-laws need to cultivate a relationship based on mutual trust and understanding. It is important to understand that working women require a lot of support at home to complete their chores. Taking care of their home, doing jobs, and raising children can altogether be exhausting for women to manage single handedly. She advises women to maintain a timetable to simplify their lives, consume a balanced diet, regulate sleeping patterns, keep themselves engaged, and keep in touch with friends and family.

Lastly, Dr. Deepshikha states that mental health should not be neglected, and if symptoms such as nervousness, anxiety, lethargy, fear, etc. persist for more than two weeks, then it is important to consult a specialist.
