What is Meningococcal Disease?

Meningococcal disease is an illness caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis. The two common presentations of meningococcal infection are meningococcal meningitis (infection of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord) and meningococcemia (infection of the bloodstream).
