Do deodorants cause breast cancer?

Do deodorants cause breast cancer, Dr Kanchan Kaur tells us more.

While a lot of us are aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, we often forget to take proactive steps to modify our lifestyle accordingly.

Many myths related to products that can cause cancer are often circulated and we asked Sr. Consultant, Surgical Oncologist (Breast), Dr. Kanchan Kaur, Medanta Hospital to clarify our doubts.

While one cannot test every single agent as a causative for Cancer she said, deodorants by themselves are not known to cause cancer. However, she adds, chemicals in our cosmetics mimic our hormones called “endocrine mimickers” that can play the role of a catalyzer if your body has a tendency to developing cancer. An exposure to such chemicals (parabens) could increase your risk to cancer. Please opt for “paraben free” cosmetics to reduce your risk of cancer.

Also, single-use plastics, like water bottles often have hidden chemicals that could cause cancer. “BPA free” is a new claim that suggests toxicity through chemicals. Make it a habit to read labels.

Dr. Kanchan Kaur leaves us with constructive suggestions – live clean, live simple, the way our grand parents did. Lead a lifestyle they lived, and we shall all be healthier. Eat natural, seasonal, local, stay away from processed foods.

Who should get tested for breast cancer?

Dr. Kanchan Kaur suggests that we should be selective about getting expensive and irrelevant tests done. Only after a consultation with an oncologist knowing your family history risk quantified by a genetic counsellor should one go in for pro-active tests.
