Dr. H.K. Chopra’s Food Mantra for Heart Health
“India is the world capital in the deficiency of Omega 3 fatty acids” says Dr. H.K. Chopra, Chief Cardiologist at Moolchand Medcity, Delhi. And central obesity (big belly) is a major problem in causing lifestyle diseases and heart problems. Our “lunching, brunching and munching” habit needs to change.
Both over or under consumption of food without nutrition is very bad for our overall health.
This is Dr. H.K. Chopra’s mantra to keep heart healthy. The food diet he advises:
• 4-5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits daily
• Consume lots of nuts – walnuts, almonds, pistachio. A ‘complete food’ and contain amino acids; Walnuts have Omega 3 fatty acids that are good for your heart. These as per Dr. Chopra are “healthy heart medicines” and should be consumed daily.
• No fried foods as they are detrimental to heart health.
• Fish that has Omega 3 fatty acids. Chicken is advised over red meat. Eggs – the white portions without cholesterol-containing yolk is preferred.
• Flaxseeds, rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.
• Oils- Unrefined oils that contain antioxidants and Omega 3 fatty acids to be used in moderation and should not be re-used
