Food as Medicine for Prediabetes

Use food as medicine for Prediabetes, Mona Jauhar tell us how. Type-2 Diabetes can be entirely prevented with early intervention and conscious food choices.

Mona Jauhar (a registered dietitian (RD), certified weight management specialist, and therapeutic lifestyle healthcare practitioner) tells us the importance of early detection. She says that in most cases (of diabetes), insulin levels start rising a few months to even a few years before the blood glucose shows any difference. According to her, with early intervention and detection, we can entirely prevent type-2 diabetes.

Mona Jauhar recommends eating clean and being conscious of where our food is coming from. As this can get challenging, she encourages growing your own vegetables if you have the means. She advises us to steer away from environmental toxins, plastics, and BPA (Bisphenol A – a synthetic compound found in many plastics) and warns us against using plastic containers for heating food, drinking tea, or in the microwave. She also asks us to abstain from the consumption of GMO (genetically modified organisms) foods. Mona further states that you must avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates early on, as this leads to a spike in your blood sugar, directly impacting your insulin resistance.

To prevent this from happening, we should eat whole fruits and vegetables, and non-processed foods. Ensure that the fruits and vegetables you consume have a low glycemic index (a rating system for foods containing carbohydrates that shows how quickly each food affects your blood sugar level when consumed on its own.) Include green leafy vegetables, lentils, and cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower and cabbage in your diet. These are all the foods that prevent an excessive spike in your sugar because they are high in fibre.
