How to identify obesity – Ritika Samaddar

Methods of how to identify obesity  in people by Ritika Samaddar. Weight gain is a common concern that can be overcome with lifestyle changes. However, before working on your weight, it is important to know what your ideal weight should be.

Ritika Samaddar (Regional Head-Dept of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Max Super Speciality Hospital-Saket) observes that losing weight has become a trend and recommends analysing your body before concluding that you are overweight. She reveals that a simple way to know your ideal body weight is by calculating your BMI (Body-Mass Index): divide your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in meters square). Ritika explains that a BMI within the range of 23 to 25 indicates a fit body. However, if the BMI is over 25, then it is a matter of concern and the individual must seek professional help to start working on their weight and bring their BMI back to normal.

Sometimes, your body-type is lean with fat around your waist. Going forward, these individuals might suffer from metabolic syndromes such as diabetes, heart problems, or other lifestyle diseases. Therefore, measuring waist circumference is an important health indicator. The ideal waist size for Indian men is less than 38 inches and for women it’s less than 32 inches. If your waist circumference exceeds the aforementioned range, then it is important to bring about change through exercise and diet.

Weight gain is attributed to three crucial factors:-

  • Genetic make-up: contributing between 5-10%
  • Exercise: contributing 20% and
  • Diet: contributing 60-80%

Therefore, to control your weight it is important to be careful about both the quality and the quantity of the food you consume.
