Identification of the source of anger is crucial before it is classified as a personality disorder. It is commonly believed that anger is the cause of external circumstances which could be unpleasant environments, situations, or people. However, apart from these external causes or interferences, Ambika Burman (Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Serenity Clinic) states that anger could also be internally triggered. For example, an individual’s thoughts might be the cause of their anger.
She recommends one to look out for borderline anger symptoms such as gritting of teeth or clenching of fists. These are indications by the body that inform an individual that they are about to get angry. These indications differ from person to person and so every individual must analyse their anger at a personal level. Once these indications are determined, the next time you get angry, mindfully observe your body and your environment and take a step back. It is important to accept the situation and take a deep breath so you don’t allow your anger to get the better of you.
